Buying an Electronic Keyboard For Christmas

Buying an Electronic Keyboard For Christmas

Buying an electronic keyboard for a Christmas present is not as difficult as you might think. you can pick up a good quality new keyboard for less than a hundred pounds and if you buy a used keyboard then you can reduce that figure to fifty pounds. these are not toy keyboards either; they are real, sixty-one note, high quality electronic keyboards.

If you are buying a keyboard for the first time then I recommend auction sites such as eBay were you are bound to find a bargain and you can also find brand new keyboards for sale, but don’t just dive in, first you need to know what to buy.

So you are buying a keyboard for yourself or most probably for you children and many people will immediately look in catalogues and visit stores like Dixon’s and Comet and surprisingly not music shops. so essentially, you are buying a keyboard blind. a keyboard is just a keyboard, if its got black and white keys that’s all you need to know right, wrong, there is a little bit more to it than that and if you or your offspring want to learn to play then its worth checking out a few features that you will need.

Top five Keyboard Buying Tips

Keyboard Size

Keyboard size is probably the most important, at a price range of a hundred pounds or less, you can buy forty-nine note, sixty-one note and if buying second hand seventy-six note keyboards. the most popular size is sixty-one note.

LCD Screens

Most modern keyboard today have a screen built in to the middle of the keyboard so you can see the operations of the keyboard, such as what sound or rhythm you are using or what notes you are playing, in fact all operation of the keyboard. buy a keyboard with a big screen. Small screens can get very cluttered and its hard to see what’s going on.

Speakers

Make sure your keyboard has built in speakers. Today’s keyboards normally have two, one on the left and one on the right and built in to the keyboard so you don’t have any trailing wires to bother about.

Auto Chord

If you are serious about learning to play the keyboard then check that your chosen keyboard has an auto chord feature. This is a system that will embellish the chords you play with your left hand by adding rhythmic background sounds including drums bass, brass, in fact a full orchestra, it is a fantastic invention and certainly helps the learning process.

Power Supply

Whatever keyboard you buy, get yourself a power supply to go with it. Don’t rely on batteries, they won’t last long and in the end, it will cost you a fortune. Power supplies are available for about ten to twenty pounds depending on which keyboard you opt for.

If you follow the above buying tips you should be able to get yourself a decent keyboard for a hundred pounds or less.

Review: Cars 2 (PS3, 360)

Review: Cars 2 (PS3, 360)

Look down – at the score. now look back up. Confused? Don’t be: Cars 2 is – as you might expect from the developers behind Toy story 3 – rather good. in fact, if you like Mario Kart and other simple, arcade racers of the ilk, Cars 2 is actually right up your street because it plugs right into what makes Nintendo’s classic so good and adds its own individuality on top. And on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, where the nearest competition is something like Blur, you’re hardly spoiled for choice.

But any discussion of a lack of alternatives only takes away credit from Cars 2, which Avalanche have crafted into something that sits alongside the film (complete with C.H.R.O.M.E. training section) but doesn’t try to replicate it, instead offering up a series of race types over a handful of courses (with various layouts) with all the key players present and correct. Lightning McQueen, loveable Mater and the numerous spies and enemies that make up the movie’s plot but are here relegated (wisely) to bit parts and voice-overs.

There’s lots of cars to collect, fans of the movies will absolutely love the work that Avalanche have done here.it is, for all intents and purposes, a Mario Kart clone. And a really good one.

The game’s built around a series of increasingly difficult ‘clearance levels’ (keeping with the thinly spread ‘spy’ theme present in the film) which are unlocked as you progress through each level depending on your success. come first, take out a set number of enemies or beat a rival and you’ll earn more spy points, thus bumping up the RPG-like level bar and therefore opening up more races. it keeps things organised (and relatively non-linear) and ensures there’s always a target to aim at.

The game starts with a training session, though, which needs to be cleared first. This set of introductory courses show you how to drive, build up your energy bar (which is used for turbos) and do tricks like spinning in the air (for more energy) and side bashes (for taking out nearby racers) and doesn’t take too long to beat. It’s a good idea for first time players, certainly, although some of the messages aren’t communicated clearly (like telling you to ‘exit’ which does not mean press the ‘exit’ button) and the loading’s a bit of a drag.

Once in the game, though, and you’re doing tricks off jumps and boosting past Corvette look-a-likes whilst drifting underneath aeroplanes, it all makes sense. There’s a multitude of race modes, including a few with weapons and one that’s purely an arena-based battle rather than a race, and they’re mixed around liberally so as to try to avoid repetition. the actual racing isn’t particularly quick but it’s definitely smooth and although the weaponry isn’t ever detailed it doesn’t take long to figure out what does what. Our favourites include the triple missile launchers and the gatling guns.

Visually it’s actually quite a suprise. once you’re past the wonky shadows (that always seem to miss a wheel making it look like cars are floating) and some odd texture load-in (usually whatever the camera’s pointing at, pre-race) the tracks are suitably varied, nicely detailed and brightly coloured. There’s some flashy effects like lovely motion blur and the game generally runs at sixty frames per second, which really gives it that arcade look and feel, and some of the courses are occasionally beautiful, even in multiplayer.

It’s odd, then, that there’s no online play at all. We’re all for split screen multiplayer (and wouldn’t ever trade that for anything) but in 2011 gamers will want the ability to play online against friends. Cars 2 doesn’t offer this, for whatever reason, which might limit the replayability for some.

Without that longevity, you’re left with a healthy pile of races in the campaign mode (which can be playing in single player or with three mates) and a nice ‘free play’ mode where you can pick and choose your event and other variables, but little else. Sure, there’s lots to collect and stacks of cars to amass, but unless you’ve got mates that live nearby you won’t be getting the most out of the game by any stretch. Like the Nintendo favourite this clearly apes, local multiplayer is as much a requirement as it’s ever been. but with it, you’re in for a blast.

Pros:

 • Superb arcade handling
 • Frequently great graphics
 • Bags of character
 • Wicked in multiplayer
 • The 3D visuals are great on PS3

Cons:

 • Slightly dull courses
 • Weapons can have that annoying factor
 • No online
 • 3D mode switches itself on every time you load

There’s much to like about Cars 2. It’s simple enough to be just about ‘pick up and play’ and the characters, whilst all nicely done and voiced, never really get in the way of the action. the course design is perhaps a little bit too traditional and reserved given the somewhat over the top racing and weaponry, but it’s all nicely rooted in the Cars universe so Pixar fans will lap up the fan service. We’d love to see Avalanche let loose on their own IP again but until then, this is a talented studio seemingly capable of anything.

Shots of the game in motion are particularly difficult to source. We’ll try to get a video done.

Husqvarna 7021P 21-Inch 160cc Honda GCV160 Gas Powered 3-N-1 Push Lawn Mower with High Rear Wheels (CARB Compliant) Reviews:

The Husqvarna 7021P is a 21″ gas powered mower with an excellent 160CC GCV Honda engine. It is rated at 6.9 gross torque making it right on par with, if not better than most other walk-behind mowers. many reviewers purchased this lawn mower because of the Honda engine and the dependability that comes along with it. It is gas efficient and most users have found it to start up quickly every time.

One reviewer bought this mower because they use push mowers for health reasons, and they stated that it is better than what the reviews say. After using it once, the reviewer went out and purchased a cheaper mower because the cheaper one gave them more of a workout! They said it is so powerful that it never bogs down and it pushes so easy that it feels self propelled. Basically it is a great mower.

The large rear wheels make it ideal for rough ground. for the price, the 7021P is a great value as you can easily spend 0 or more on a lawnmower, especially considering this mower features a Honda engine. It is a four stroke engine so there is no need to mix the oil with the gas. It has been recommended for anything other than large or hilly lawns. If you do have a larger area it would probably be better to buy a self propelled lawn mower.

Some reviewers weren’t so happy with the lawn mower however. in fact, some consider it a piece of junk. They said it has the potential to be a nice mower since it’s light weight and rolls easily, but the quality control is bad. Some have found the mower to pulse between fast and slow, or is hard to start. Still others don’t care for the automatic choke, and would rather regulate it themselves.

One reviewer in particular was excited about their new purchase, but after 10 seconds of the first start it died. After rechecking the fluids and rereading the manual, they started it up again but it died again after 10 seconds. They came to the conclusion that they must have received a lemon.

But with a simple set-up and ample power, the majority of reviewers were more than happy after buying this lawn mower. It is a quality mower with a great engine and build quality. And for the price, it is simply a good deal. Make sure you do your research before purchasing a mower on-line though. sometimes they can be damaged during shipping, or like one of the reviewers stated, you might just be unlucky and get a lemon.

Lach Ness Monster: Lump, Log, or Otter?

Lach Ness Monster: Lump, Log, or Otter?

I have been known to believe in some pretty strange things. Things that no one else gives a second thought. mostly things, such as Nessie, but this is on the more realistic side of the Fiji Mermaid.

In this article, I have done my research, collected true data, and will present the facts for you one by one so that you can make your own decision. as whimsical as it may seem, I for one believe that something could be there. Now, grab a cup of coffee, or a bag of sugar, and start reading.

First, the lake. Lake Ness, or the popular ‘Loch’ is a long deep lake very near Inverness, Scotland. it is part of a huge fissure in the earth that nearly divides Scotland in half. it is a conveniently murky lake perfect for hiding 30-ft. long serpents and plesiosaurs in, and can also be up to 900 ft. deep in certain areas. the lake is also extremely cold. Reaching negative readings quite commonly. but do not give up hope in Nessie just yet there are many facts to be revealed still

Nessie. the history of the lake being a mysterious place dates back over 1500 years. Back to the days of one St. Columba. St. Columba was an Irish monk, who not only converted most of Scotland to Christianity, but was able to sooth the original Nessie, who before his time was a murderess. the sightings and speculations on our dear pal Nessie in the modern age, (comparatively anyway) begin in 1934, with the first photo of Nessie, taken by a Dr. Robert Kenneth Wilson, a London physician, who photographed the allegedly plesiosaur-like neck, head and partial body arising from the water. this photo is below.

[cococomics.net/images/ness/1.jpg]

This photo caused a stir large enough to get some scientific experts on the scene. After looking over the photo, they ruled that it was obviously either a twenty-foot otter, or a log sticking vertically out of the water.

One of the most famous photos -entitled the Surgeon’s photo aptly, because of the occupation of the photographer- is below.

[cococomics.net/images/ness/1.jpg]

Notice something similar? yes. They are the same photo. this photo, as it turns out, was a hoax. A rather cheaply organized one at that. an associate of the doctor, Christian Spurling, admitted on his death bed that the photo was made using a 14 inch toy submarine, with a piece of wood attached.

This next photo was called the Mackays and Campbell, and was taken in 1933.

[cococomics.net/images/ness/2.jpg]

The photo was taken by a couple who owned a pub at Drumnadrochit. on April 14, they took the photo, and told Alex Campbell, the man responsible for controlling salmon fishing in the loch. Campbell of course agreed that it was in fact the Loch Ness Monster, because he had ‘seen’ Nessie on numerous occasions. Like so many other photos, this one simply faded to the background as more and more ‘evidence’ cropped up.

I will offer, as one last photographic piece of evidence, this photo:

[cococomics.net/images/ness/3.jpg]

It is actually a sonar image picked up by a study that was held by Dr. Robert Rines, and funded by the American Academy of Applied Science. the tools used were sonar and automatic cameras. In 1972, one of their cameras photographed what appeared to be a flipper, or Nessie herself, at about 6 feet long, in 4 frames of film. In 1975, they struck another photo, blurred, but appearing to be Nessie’s face.

The Science of Her Existence

‘So what’ you say. ‘That is just a bunch of photos and otters.’ well, here is the actual science, proving, or disproving the existence of everyone’s favorite lake monster.

We know that the lake is at least 24 miles long, and in places, 900 feet deep. this, by a long boring system of equations, tells us that the lake can hold up to 30 metric tons of salmon. any creature such as Nessie would only weigh 10 percent as much as the total vittles available, so Nessie, if existent, and single, would weigh around 660 pounds (300kg). however, there is a problem with that theory. Zoologists have calculated that in order to perpetuate the species, or small clan of Nessies, there would have to be at least ten of the said beast. Is this possible? Each one would weigh far less than 660 lbs. this weight is easily topped by the Baltic Sturgeon, a fish that can grow up to 450 lbs. but what about the temperature of the lake? You ask? well, in order for Nessie and her pals to live in such cold water, they would have to be. Let’s see.. Adapted to it over 1500 years? yes, well, that puts the water issue to rest.

Knowing all this, it is up to you to decide.. can Nessie exist? Are the Scottish of the Loch simply money hungry skirt-wearers? All I did was state the facts. Now you can form your own conclusions..

Cranium Fort Is It A Good Construction Toy For Your Child?

Your child’s physical and language skills develop while playing and interacting with others. Creativity and imagination are enhanced by playing with construction toys. Castles, battlegrounds, houses, and many other things can be built by your child even before going to school. Children of all ages enjoy many hours of fun and fascination, while developing their motor skills, mental agility and ingenuity.

Cranium Fort comes in many models. while only one object can be made using a smaller model, the bigger sets can be used to build several objects. these are simple sets that will give your child a sense of achievement after completing a construction.

Hand-eye coordination, logical thinking and spatial awareness are all benefits that will accrue to your child regardless of whether he/ she is able to complete the construction.

Motor skills can be developed by playing with the interlocking blocks; I suggest you buy big interlocking blocks, as your child will find it easier to shunt these, unlike some other models which require to be fitted.

If you buy a model that has a base resembling an object such as a ship or a building, it will be easier for your toddler to produce something resembling these objects.

The manufacturers, Cranium, who began manufacturing Cranium Fort toys, in 1998, have grown into a major player in the toy industry. They claim to put the safety of their products on priority as a result of which they have never felt the need to recall any of their toys.

Some of the Cranium Fort models available in the market include Super Fort, Mega Fort, Carnival Clubhouse, and Mega Land. The lowest-priced, starter set costs $24.99.

One of the loveliest surprises about Richard Ayoade’s bittersweet romance Submarine (out now on DVD) is its exquisite original soundtrack, by Arctic Monkey Alex Turner. The score, which is reminiscent of Cat Stevens’s work on Hal Ashby’s subversive Harold and Maude, is an increasingly rare occurrence, as there so very few decent movie soundtracks produced anymore. There’s a dearth of great film composers to compare to the likes of John Barry, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Vangelis and Danny Elfman. In the main, most of the scores and songs for most film genres – be they action, romantic, thriller, indie, comedy or horror – seem so completely unmemorable. recent Oscar ceremonies have highlighted the lack of a killer soundtrack. In fact, probably the most distinctive one was back in 1997, with Celine Dion warbling "my Heart Will Go On" on Titanic.

While the standard of Oscar winners for best Film is getting markedly better – no Country for old Men, The hurt Locker, Crash, The King’s Speech – the actual soundtracks are hard to recall. perhaps, of course, that’s the point. An overbearing or prominent soundtrack may detract from the film’s images, plotline, acting and so on. but the winners of the best soundtrack in the past 10 years have been distinctly underwhelming – the likes of Frida, Finding Neverland, Babel, Atonement and last year’s The Social Network. all pretty unexceptional. The only exception being Pixar’s sumptuous up in 2009. and animation (particularly the animations by Pixar) is the one area which excels with its soundtracks. Michael Giacchino’s work on up was memorably stirring, enhancing this gorgeous film’s weep-factor. Similarly, Randy Newman’s work – including the songs "You’ve got a Friend in Me" and "We Belong Together" – on the Toy story trilogy is outstanding.

However, gone, it seems, are the days when you leave a cinema humming the score. John Williams, in particular, was a master of the unforgettable soundtrack, composing the background music to Jaws ("Der-dum der-dum dum dum dum dum"), Star Wars ("Der der der, der der-der, der der-derrrr"), and Raiders of the Lost Ark ("do do-do do doo do do, do do-do do doo do do") during a giddy two decades – 1970s and 1980s – for film soundtracks.

John Barry was also a wonderful scorer of action movies, perfecting the James Bond sound – a heady blend of jazz, brass and lush melodies – on 1964′s Goldfinger, 1967′s You Only Live Twice and 1971′s Diamonds Are Forever. Ennio Morricone was, of course, a whiz at the spaghetti Western, scoring and enhancing (immeasurably) A few Dollars more, The good, the bad and the ugly and Once upon a Time in the West, employing whistles, jaw harps, trumpets and gunshots to create an aural sensation. Before Morricone there was Bernard Herrmann, the composer who was a key component of Hitchcock’s masterpieces, scoring Psycho, North by Northwest and Vertigo, and before Herrmann there was the great Max Steiner, who scored King Kong (1933), Casablanca (1942) and gone with the Wind (1939).

Apart from Turner’s compositions for Submarine and Daft Punk’s decent work on the baffling Tron: Legacy, pop and rock acts just don’t seem interested in creating exceptional scores anymore. Air were outstanding on The Virgin Suicides (but Sofia Coppola’s film was made in 1999) and badly Drawn Boy excelled with "Something to Talk About" and "silent Sigh" on about a Boy, but this was nine years ago. and then there’s Quentin Tarantino, whose use of music on Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown was undeniably ingenious. (How much different would the ear-lopping scene have been if some solemn or even manic strings had been used instead of the humorous "Stuck in the Middle with You"?). however, Tarantino, by rifling through his record collection and selecting his favourite songs, may have sounded a death knell for original material on movies. Why bother creating new songs when there’s so much pop music out there you can use? and film scores feel sloppy as a result. The same tired tracks – ELO’s "Mr Blue Sky", Buggles’ "Video Killed the Radio Star", or anything by Coldplay used again and again. It makes you hanker for Harold Faltermeyer’s synth work on Beverly Hills Cop and it definitely makes you pine for the rousing soundtracks on 1980s teen gems such as Pretty in Pink (featuring OMD’s "if You Leave"), Risky Business (featuring Tangerine Dream) and The Breakfast Club (featuring Simple Minds’ "Don’t You (Forget about Me)").

Perhaps Elvis Costello’s original song, "Sparkling Day", written especially for Lone Scherfig’s adaptation of David Nicholls’s one Day will spark a revival. but, then, as long as crunch-bang-wallop bombast predominates in action fodder such as Transformers and Captain America, there seems little hope of a full-blown film soundtrack renaissance. maybe we just need better films…

‘Submarine’ is out now on DVD; ‘One Day’ is released nationwide on 24 August
